In a unique television experiment, Minister MacKay is plunged into the daily grind of the troops he sends into battle, and put through a gruelling two-day program of army combat training, at the Canadian Forces base in Petawawa, Ont.
With unrestricted access, the filmmakers chronicle and candidly record the training as part of an experiment to test the Minister’s mettle and real-life skills. As just another enlisted man starting at the bottom, “Private MacKay” receives no special treatment in his training for battle deployment. Over the course of the training, MacKay is forced into the trenches, takes part in an arduous obstacle course, and experiences a nighttime ambush-and-shooting exercise using live ammunition.
